And hillbilly music, of course.
Two of my favorite things collided yesterday. Terry Gross, host of NPR’s Fresh Air, had as her guest Dwight Yoakam. Those who know me will remember the country music jag I went on a few years ago, spearheaded by Dwight’s breakout album, Guitars and Cadillacs. I’ve always liked his music, even though I’ve expanded my musical tastes. He’s got a new album out where he plays his old hits in bluegrass style. That’s why he was on Fresh Air. Also a big fan of Fresh Air and Dwight! When I heard this interview, I was working on something else, but I didn’t sense the enthusiasm and warmth TG reserves for her favorite guests. The song she asked him to play didn’t sound great without the Bakersfield sound behind it. His relationship to the religion of his youth was a surprise, but a nice one. I was really comforted to observe that he forgets important things, too.

I listened to bluegrass most of the day at work today. Sometimes I just need it.
I’m sure I will like Dwight’s bluegrass versions of his songs far better than I would have liked the originals.

Yoakam had a good role in the movie “Slingblade,” too. If your name is Yoakam, you should be required to play country music
